To grow sustainably, we are committed to meeting today's needs without compromising future generations. This means that our actions ensure the quality of our products and services and aim at promoting the development of the communities where our industrial units are located, always guided by our responsibility to protect the environment.
Following guidelines provided by international programs, such as Responsible Care® and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), we favor the use of clean and efficient technologies which has brought continuous improvement to our processes.
In the last years, we have observed significant improvements in waste generation rates, effluent treatment, water consumption in our production units, and greenhouse gas emissions.
Oxiteno is member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a non-profit organization headquartered in Malaysia, which gathers the entire production chain of palm oil and its stakeholders. Its objective is to promote the sustainable growth of the oil palm culture and palm oil production through worldwide regulation.
Our sustainability policy is founded on Governance and five different pillars of activity: Safety, Environment, People, Products and Services, and Value Chain.

Oxiteno's investment and growth strategy reflects our commitment to the industry, the segments we are involved in, the neighboring communities of our industrial units, and with the culture and habits of the population of the countries in which we operate. The relationship with our stakeholders is based on ethics and transparency.
Oxiteno sees safety as a value. We focus on Risk Analysis and Management. This has allowed us to reach results comparable to international best practices.
Our management system is assessed and improved on a regular basis. It encourages adopting new methods and practices, such as the risk-based model for process safety of the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS). Regarded as an international standard, the model is known to be the most advanced one for the Chemical Industries.
In addition to process safety, Oxiteno is also a reference for its careful choice of safe technologies for its production units and pilot plants. Results indicate that there is a positive relationship between risk reduction and the increase of process efficiency in its units.
Oxiteno's environment protection related actions are comprehensive, covering the entire value chain and favoring the use of clean technologies capable of producing sustainable chemical solutions. Among these actions, the following items are highlighted:
Internal processes
In order to ensure better technical rates, increase productivity, and reduce waste, we keep an operational performance internal monitoring and control system that allows for immediate and continuous action in the operations.
For process improvement we adopt specific programs and actions, such as reduction of greenhouse and local effect gas emissions, water reuse, reduction of waste generation, increase of productivity, and the adoption of the Six Sigma and of the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) programs.
Atmospheric Emission Monitoring and Reduction Program
By adopting cleaner technologies, over the last years we have reduced the volume of atmospheric emission by approximately 30%.
The Atmospheric Emission Monitoring and Reduction Program, which started in 2008, allowed the company to improve the indicator of CO2 emissions. The program monitors the reduction of atmospheric emissions of local effect pollutants, particulate matter (PM), sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It also includes a portrait of the emissions and an evaluation of how emissions affect the quality of the air based on the dispersion of air pollutants.
Oxiteno is permanently committed to valuing skills and developing people. To achieve this goal, we implemented several projects focused on employee training, knowledge retention, and wellbeing at the workplace.
We follow a global management model, whose objective is to standardize processes, align and further integrate all Human Resources policies in all countries where we operate.
Every year we conduct an Organizational Environment Survey to identify issues that need to be addressed. The 2010 survey, which was conducted in all of the units of the company, had the participation of 91% of all the employees.
We also encourage professionals from units all around the world to exchange and share knowledge as a way to disseminate individual contributions while integrating them to Oxiteno's culture.
Green chemistry is already a reality at Oxiteno. Aligned with world trends, we seek to develop new products with raw materials from vegetable origin and renewable sources.
Currently, 20% of purchased raw materials come from renewable sources. And around 35% of our products contain renewable ingredients.
By using vegetable origin raw materials, Oxiteno was able to expand its line of products and strengthen its role as one of the main Surfactants suppliers in the world market. In this line, our Oleochemicals and green Solvent are also highlighted.
Oleochemicals
Produced from vegetable oils, they generate Fatty Alcohols, Fatty Acids, and Glycerin. These products are used mainly in Personal Care, Home Care and I&I products. Oxiteno is the only producer of natural fatty alcohols in Latin America.
Surfactants and Co-Surfactants
Manufactured with high content of renewable carbon from vegetable oils, such as palm kernel, palm, soy, and coconut oil. These products are used in Personal Care, Home Care and I&I, Paints and Coatings, Agrochemicals, among others.
Solvents
Produced from compounds extracted from sugarcane, they generate Natural Alcohols, C4 (Isobutanol) and C5 (Isopentanol). These products are used mainly in the Coatings and Fragrances Industries.
Oxiteno uses natural and synthetic raw materials. This differential allows us to make unique technological combinations to meet market needs and encourages the innovation and development of new products. In the last years, we expanded our platform of renewable technologies, focusing on the use of raw materials such as vegetable oils and sugarcane, thus strengthening our position as a sustainable company.
